Zen attitude-La Pagode de Vincennes

At the occasion of the Festival of Nepal organised by the Nepalese community of Paris I went to visit the Pagoda the other day first time in a year or two....
A l'occassion du Festival de Nepal organisé par la communauté nepalaise de Paris je suis alleé visiter la Pagode l'autre jour première fois depuis un ou deux années...

...and I was lucky to catch this photo of a young Nepalese Lady from the eastern Himalayas who is married to a French man now.She carries the traditional Sherpa load of those brave guide-carriers without whom life in the Himalayas would not be possible.
....et j'avais de la chance d'attrapper ce photo d'une jeune femme nepalaise des Himalayas de l'Est maintenant mariée avec un Français.Elle porte la charge traditionelle des Sherpas ces courageux guides -porteurs sans lesquels la vie aux Himalayas ne serait pas possible.
Je suis souvent allée à la Pagode pour les grand fêtes bouddhistes des divers communités car c'est la seule occassion d'acceder à la Pagode .Le programm est d'ailleurs afficher à l'extérieure.
I often went to the Pagoda at the occassion of the great Buddhist festivals of the diverse communities because it is the only occassion to enter the Pagoda.

The grand pagoda of Vincennes is one of the last vestiges of a group of buildings built at the time of the colonial exposition of 1931 . Nowadays there remains only the Museum of Arts of Africa and of Oceania from which certain treasures have been transferred to the museum of Quai Branly , as well as the statue of colonizing France, Porte Dorée. The houses of Togo and Cameroun and the shelter of the pirogues remain in the enclosure of the Pagoda.
At the interior of the enclosure a principal building and five secondary ones, works of the architects Louis-Hippolyte Boileau and Charles Carrière, had been constructed for the exposition.
They have been build by hand and without the use of nails and still remain today.
One is in a very bad condition and inaccessible to the  public.

La grande pagode de Vincennes est l’un des derniers vestiges d’un groupe de bâtiments édifiés lors de l'exposition coloniale de 1931.
De cette extraordinaire exposition, il ne subsiste de nos jours que le Musée des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie dont certains trésors sont transférés au musée du quai Branly, la statue de la France colonisatrice, Porte Dorée, ainsi que les pavillons du Togo et du Cameroun et l'abri des pirogues sur le site de la Pagode.
A l’intérieur de l'enceinte, avaient été construits pour l'exposition, un pavillon principal et cinq pavillons secondaires, oeuvre des architectes Louis-Hippolyte Boileau et Charles Carrière.
Ils ont éte construit à la main et sans l'aide des clous. Les trois bâtiments cités plus haut subsistent aujourd'hui. L’un dans un très mauvais état est interdit au public.

  The central building 28 meters high which sheltered  from 1933 to 1971 the Museum of Industries of the Wood of the Town of Paris, became the "Grand Pagoda” in 1977, at the request of Jean Sainteny, old French official in Kampuchea, appointed Commissaire of the Republic for Tonkin in 1945, while remaining the exclusive property of the city administration.
Indeed, in front of the massive arrival of the refugees of Southeast Asia, it was more than necessary to create a place where these people could resource themselves spiritually and allow them not to break with their traditions, their culture and  their religion. 

All the great Buddhist festivals like  Vesak and Kathina are celebrated in this place by some of the Buddhist communities installed in France.
These festivals, apart from the community and religious aspects, invited westerners to allow them to get to know better their culture and tradition, which were  almost unknown in the Seventies and thus breaking with any prejudices and exotic visions of all kinds . The festivals respect as much as possible the lunar calendar and proceed in a very convivial and friendly climate

Le bâtiment central haut de 28 mètres qui abrita de 1933 à 1971 le Musée des Industries du Bois de la Ville de Paris, devint la « Grande Pagode en 1977 », à la demande de Jean Sainteny, ancien officiel français au Cambodge, nommé Commissaire de la République pour le Tonkin en 1945, tout en demeurant la propriété exclusive de la Ville de Paris.
Effectivement, devant l'arrivée massive des réfugiés d'Asie du Sud-Est, il était plus que nécessaire de créer un lieu où ceux-ci pourraient se retrouver spirituellement et ne pas rompre leurs attaches avec leurs traditions, leur culture, leur religion.

Toutes les grandes fêtes bouddhiques dont le Vesak et Kathina sont célébrées dans ce lieu par certaines des communautés bouddhistes installées en France. Ces fêtes, en dehors des aspects communautaires et religieux, invitaient les occidentaux à mieux connaître leur culture et tradition, inconnues ou presque dans les années 70 et opérer une rupture avec les préjugés et visions exotiques de toutes genres.
Les fêtes respectent dans la mesure de possible le calendrier lunaire et se déroulent dans un climat très convivial et agréable

On the frontal facade of the Pagoda the Dharma-Chakra symbolising the way to enlightenment taught by the Buddha is reproduced.
The grand Pagoda contains a 10 m high statue of Buddha,a work of the sculptor Yugoslav F.Mozès and carried out in six parts in the workshops of the painter Miro in Paris.

Sur la façade de la grande pagode figure le Dharma-Chakra, symbol du chemin vers l’éveil enseigné par le Bouddha.
La Pagode renferme une grande statue de Bouddha, haute de 10 mètres, oeuvre du sculpteur yougoslave F.Mozès et réalisé en six parties dans les ateliers du peintre Miro à Paris.
A variety of representations of Buddhas such as Avalokiteshvara, Buddha of Compassion known as  Tchenrezi in Tibet and in a female form as Guanyin and Kannon in Japan are to be discovered in the Pagoda.

 Il est possible de découvrir dans la Pagode des différentes représentations de bouddhas comme Avalokiteshvara, bouddha de la Compassion connu en tant queTchenrezi au Tibet et sous une forme féminine Guanyin et Kannon au Japon.

 
There is also a small traditional Tibetan temple on the site which has been built in 1985 and designed by the architect Jean-Luc Massot according to instructions of Kalu Rinpoche  a great Tibetan Master who has also written many books available in English.
The temple is used as a meditation center where under the heading  of Karmapa and Kalu Rinpoche and directed by Lama Gyurme regular buddhist courses are taking place.

Il existe sur le site aussi un petit temple tibétain, traditionnel, édifié en 1985, conçu par l'architecte Jean-Luc Massot selon les instructions de Kalou Rimpoché, un très grand maître tibétain , qui a aussi écrit des nombreuses livres traduit en français.
Le temple est utilisé comme centre de meditation où sous la direction de Karmapa et Kalu Rinoche et la résponsabilité de Lama Gyurme des cours bouddhistes prennent place régulièrement.

This temple of Bhutanese architecture preserves nevertheless all the characteristics specific to  Tibetan temples.
In particular the four pillars of the front of the building symbolize the "Four Noble Truths" taught by the Buddha.
On the roof the dharma-chakra it surrounded of two gazelles symbolizing the first sermon of the Buddha.

 

Ce temple d’architecture bouthanaise conserve cependant toutes les caractéristiques propres aux temples tibétains. Notamment les quatre piliers du devant du bâtiment symbolisent les « Quatre Nobles Vérités » énoncées par le Bouddha.  Sur le toit le dharma-chakra entouré de deux gazelles symbolisant le premier sermon du Bouddha.
 

 Puis l'elephant en bois à l'entrée  est aussi un relic de l'expo universelle de 1931...
The wooden elephant at the entrance is another relic of the universal expo of 1931...

J'ai googlé "atmosphère, atmosphère ... est-ce que j'ai une geule d'atmosphère?" et pouf, après trois clics, me voilà en visite dans ton coin de Paris!
C'est un peu d'exotisme tout à fait apprécié pour une petite belge à Manhattan.

Quel plaisir de découvrir par ton regard ce Paris que je ne connais pas !
Serai-je un occidental trop aveugle de la richesse de mon pays !
